Breastfeed: Getting started

Source: Baby Center

How to start breastfeeding

The first time you hold your newborn in the delivery room is a great time to start breastfeeding. At the beginning, your body will produce small amounts of a special milk called colostrum that will help protect your baby from infection. (Your baby's tummy is very tiny, so she only needs these small amounts to fill up. As her tummy grows, your milk will change and you'll produce more of it.)
Turn your baby's whole body toward you, chest to chest. Touch her upper lip with your nipple, and, when she opens her mouth wide, pull her onto your breast, holding your breast for support. Her mouth should cover not just the nipple but as much of the areola (the darker part surrounding it) as possible.

Don't panic if your newborn seems to have trouble finding or staying on your nipple. Breastfeeding requires patience and lots of practice. Don't hesitate to ask a nurse to show you what to do, and request visits from a lactation consultant while you're in the hospital (many hospitals have them on staff).

If you have a premature baby, you may not be able to nurse right away, but you should start pumping your milk. Your baby will receive this milk through a tube or a bottle until she's strong enough to nurse.

Once you get started, remember that nursing shouldn't be painful. Pay attention to how your breasts feel when your baby latches on. Her mouth should cover a big part of the areola below the nipple, and your nipple should be far back in your baby's mouth.
If latch-on hurts, break the suction (by inserting your little finger between your baby's gums and your breast) and try again. Once your baby latches on properly, she'll do the rest.

How often you should nurse

Frequently. The more you nurse, the more milk you'll produce. Nursing eight to 12 times every 24 hours is pretty much on target.
According to guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), rather than nursing according to a rigid schedule, you should nurse your newborn whenever she shows early signs of hunger, such as increased alertness or activity, mouthing, or rooting around for your nipple. Crying is a late sign of hunger – ideally, you should start feeding your baby before she starts crying.

During the first few days, you may have to gently wake your baby to begin nursing, and she may fall asleep again mid-feeding. (To keep her awake during feedings, you may want to unswaddle her or remove a layer of clothing.) To make sure your baby's eating often enough, wake her up if it's been four hours since your last nursing session.

How to get comfortable

Since feedings can take up to 40 minutes, especially in the newborn months, pick a cozy spot for nursing. Hold your baby in a position that won't leave your arms and back sore. It works well to support the back of your baby's head with your hand, but the position you choose really depends on what's comfortable for you.
If you're sitting, a nursing pillow can be a big help in supporting your baby. Many moms also find a footstool helps them get comfy. Whether you're sitting or lying down, don't start the feeding until you and your baby are comfortable because you'll be in that position for a while.

What you should eat

A normal healthy diet is all you need while you're nursing. Although you can produce milk for your baby even if your nutrition isn't up to par, eating a well-balanced diet will ensure that the quantity and quality of your milk is all it can be and will help you feel your best. Follow your hunger rather than counting calories, and drink fluids throughout the day to stay well hydrated.

Many moms feel extra hungry while breastfeeding, which makes sense – your body is working around the clock to make breast milk for your baby. Eating small meals with healthy snacks in between (the way you may have done during pregnancy) is a good way to keep your hunger in check and your energy level high. (As a general guideline, most women who are breastfeeding will need about 200 to 500 calories more than moms who aren't.)
Don't overdo your caffeine consumption, because you'll pass the caffeine along to your baby in your breast milk and it can accumulate in her system. (Experts recommend limiting your intake to no more than 300 mg per day, about the amount you'd get in a 12-ounce cup of coffee).
You'll also want to limit drinking alcohol while you're breastfeeding, because it also enters your breast milk.
Most nursing babies don't mind if Mom indulges in spicy foods. In fact, some experts believe that babies enjoy some variety. No foods are problematic for all babies, so there's no need to restrict what you eat right away. But if your baby seems more gassy or irritable every time you eat a particular food (dairy products, for example), try eliminating the suspect food for a while to see if she's better off without them in her breast milk.

Problems you may encounter

Some women adjust to breastfeeding easily, encountering no major physical or emotional hurdles. But many new moms find it hard to learn. If you're feeling discouraged, you're not the only one.

It's normal to feel overwhelmed by your baby's constant demands and exhausted from lack of sleep. And you may have questions: Is my baby getting enough milk? Should I have sore nipples? How long should my baby nurse? Should I wake her if she falls asleep nursing?
Although women have nursed their babies for centuries, breastfeeding doesn't always come easily. Many women face difficulties early on. Some of the most common breastfeeding problems you may encounter in the first six weeks include:
Don't suffer in silence. Call your healthcare provider or a lactation consultant if you're suffering from any of the above, if you're in pain, or if physical discomfort is getting in the way of nursing.

the new resolution to fully breastfeed

Assalam..

I still can't hide my frustration each time I am in a discussion with group of mommies, talking about breastfeeding. I only managed to breastfeed Fahri for almost 4 months. I still remember, during that particular time, when Fahri was born, I was stucked with my deadlines to submit my master's chapters. I still could recall, most of every nights during my confinement, when all the new mommies were enjoying their breastfeeding or pumping out their milk, but I was developing my chapters. The only mistake that I did was i held to this one self-created theory which I should not! which is: " It's ok baby...mama will start breast-pumping once mama starts working...now enjoy my direct breastfeeding"...without doing more research and surveys on breastfeeding/ breast-pumping, little that I know I should start producing stocks of my breast-pumped milk since the first week of confinement! Oh..how confident i was! But, i didn't blame my thesis, it just me, didn't know how to manage my time properly and yes! lack of knowledge! and yes! own lack-of-research theory!

Ok...stop blaming myself. However, I am grateful that I managed to enjoy my BF moment for 4 months. It was really precious moment. And I really miss it. Now, I have promised myself to try my best to fully breastfeed my second baby till one year old, at least. Firstly, of course, knowledge, u alls! I am starting my research now. I need to learn from zero, I guess. So, I am gonna share the breastfeeding tips after this, just in case I want to refer back to the tips here =)

Thoughtful thinking on a long day

I am on MC today. I must be so tired yesterday or maybe my baby inside just want me to have a 'kit-kat' time..I do need a rest. I am on my 31st week of pregnancy already. I deserve a good rest. My students will understand...InsyaAllah..

I turned on the TV this morning while having my Dumil Mama Milk and fried rice...I chose to watch 'Semanis Kurma'...I'll always prefer a talk show compared to other programs. The topic was about a second marriage. I was so touched with one caller just now. She told the host as well as the panels that now, she is happily married, for a second time with the same person! She explained on how the marriage was on a rock before and how they got back together now, but the most important thing is that I really love her advice;

" If you think your husband or your wife doesn't love you anymore, or your marriage is on the rock, please don't seek for advice from other people, seek it from Allah S.W.T. Sometimes we complete the 5 prayers routine everyday, but we tend to forget Allah S.W.T. We must ask from HIM. InsyaAllah, he will give what we want if we always ask."

On man...I couldn't agree more. Yes. I admit that. We do pray 5 times a day...fasting during Ramadhan. But, is that enough? I admit that sometimes I just perform my prayer without raising up my hand and pray to Allah S.W.T. and ask from him. Why I must be so arrogant? He is my creator...I should and always thankful and talk to him. Limited time is always an excuse.
Sometimes, we think that we pray everyday, asking from HIM a lot of things, but still He doesn't fulfill our wish. Why? It's very easy. We ask almost everything from him, to have this, to achieve that, but do we fulfill His wish for us to become his best servant? We take a very good care of our prayers but, do we follow all His rules? do we cover our aurat?  do we remember Him and all His passengers by reciting Al-Quran? Well, there are so many things that we need to take care of before wondering why it's not our turn yet to achieve our dreams like other people. We know our weaknesses. Let's improve, people...Subhanallah..

Penang and the perfect wife

I am at home already. No need to ask what is the time now..or else i sedang kantoikan diri sendiri ;p.Oh my...Ustaz is calling...what does he want? Anyway, i am going to Penang starting from tomorrow till Monday with my big families (hubby, Fahri and I, my dad, mom and sis together with my bro, sil and the two boys) and if everything goes accordingly to plan, we might stay one night at hubby's kampung- Ijuk, Perak since my MIL will be there for a week. I have invited my mom and dad to join along. I know they love going to new places and meeting new people especially those places that they have never been to. And Penang is one of the places that my mom is longing to travel around. Actually, based on our (hubby and I) finance condition for this month, we should not go anywhere for a vacation, but because I love my mom so much and she is really hoping that this family vacation will be a dream comes true, i have succeeded persuading my hubby to go. Yeay! Thank u hubby. I have been to Penang once during my lecturing years in Perak back in 2007. It was a two-day visit to Penang...I can't recall the purpose of the visit but I went there with my good colleagues and all I remembered was that we went to Panggung P.Ramlee to watch one of our good friends' act - a classic traditional play. Oh man... I was sooo into theater back then. Anyway, all I can say is that I love Penang and I miss being there. There will be another reason why I can't afford to say no to my mom. And of course, the food! I am imagining the best Nasi kandar now! I am not craving but I am a food lover...U give me good food..i'll pay, buddy! Despite the fact that I am trying my best not to gain so much this time around, I am gonna be a food junkie at Penang, without an excuse! But of course, being fat doesn't help either ;)

You know what, I am currently in the mid of reading 'How To Be Married' by Polly Williams. It's a great novel! Since I am starting to read novels back (after completing my master's), this one is a can't-be-missed novel. I bought it using my book voucher and it really worth it. I can't wait to finish it but I am going for a vacation. I don't think I have the time to enjoy my leisure reading there. Just gonna share a lil bit of the storyline. It's about Sadie Drew, a wife and a mother of 4-year old kid, clumsy, doesn't really care about her appearance after delivering her first child, plus she neglects most of the the house-chores' lists. Basically, she is far from being the perfect wife. Until she met an old lady, quite mysterious, her life is starting to change. She learns slowly how to be the perfect wife. So, what does she learn? You need to read it! haha...
I can see myself in Sadie's character in a way. That's how I consider a good novel is...when I can relate the story with mine..heee. Not in every ways but certain circumstances that have been plotted by Williams are just exactly what most wives nowadays are facing through. I think I am better than Sadie in many ways ;p InsyaAllah...
Ok...need to start packing now before mr hubby gets back from work.

Another circle of friends

Pipah, Kamine, me and Fina

I love these people. There should be one more lady in the picture, the newly wed Aida. All of them were my ex colleagues. I really had good time during those years. Meeting up with them will always be the moment that I am excited about. It's different. I'll always make sure that I am well prepared before the catching-up session. Why?

Because of the topics that we usually discuss. With my other circles of friends, I will usually have a so called 'girlish and kak joyah' chatting. But with Fina, Afifah, Kamine and Aida....I feel so matured. We are still talking about motherhood, life, future and kids but we talk from heart. We don't care about taking care of each other's feeling...we're just being ourselves. I just love it. Talking with them makes me part of them. I feel educated and brilliant! haha...boleh tak...

I can't wait for another cath-up session! Love u guys!

Dear BB,

 Dear BB,

Anyway, BB is referred to my second baby inside my tummy, not blackberry. BB, You should know that mama and papa love u so much. And of course abg Fahri loves you too! Mama can't hardly wait to see you in this real world. Some people said that the excitement of getting a second child is not as exciting as getting the first one. But mama wants you to know that there is no difference. I am going to love you just exactly the way I love abg Fahri.

It's funny how mama has a strong feeling and instinct that you are gonna be a girl, but you are actually a boy! Another boy in the family! Well, mama's hair is growing healthily this time around unlike during mama's first pregnancy. Thus, mama thought it's gonna be a girl! And mama loves to dress and doll up too. Mama thought it is the symptom of having a baby girl. But, it doesn't change the fact that I love you so much. So much. No worries. I can't wait to see u in a clearer picture when mama and papa are going for 3D and 4D scan on next month's check-up!

Of course mama is hoping for a daughter but we still have a lot of time, baby! More productions are on the way (what the....hahah). It is cute to have a sister, right? I really hope you and abg Fahri are going to be the best buddy later. Mama can imagine myself being the queen in the house ;) Let's pray to Allah S.W.T. that you will be delivered safely, healthily, beautifully and perfectly. InsyaAllah.....

Hye bb! Mama and papa can't wait to see u!

Abg fahri pun cannot wait tau, bb! We love u! Mwahhh...xoxo
